JOB TITLE: THIRD ENGINEER (3E)
Age: 35-45, Minimum of 5 experience
GENERAL
The 3E is responsible to CE/2E. The 3E shall take over the duties of the 2E in his absence.
QUALIFICATIONS
The 3E’s qualifications are:
possession of all valid certificates under STCW and the Flag of the ship for the type of the ship and her trading.
good general knowledge of all ship’s engineering activities.
Engineering / Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. construction management, Mechanical engineering)
3E’S GENERAL DUTIES
The 3E:
carries out Watch/Duty Engineer responsibilities
assists in the Engine Room during maneuvering
incineration
performs any other duties as requested
3E’S MAINTENANCE DUTIES
The 3E ensures the maintenance and repair of:
Auxiliary engines
Auxiliary boiler and exhaust gas economizer
Incinerator.
Fresh water generator
emergency equipment such as:
lifeboat motors
emergency compressor & emergency fire pumps
fire fighting/safety equipment in the Engine Room
fuel tank valve trips
The 3E maintains machinery records and maintenance plans for above
The 3E ensures that the feed water of the boiler(s) and main engine is tested. Testing is done daily on turbine vessels and at least weekly on motor vessels. The CE monitors and ensures the test readings are recorded in the water chemical maker’s data sheets
3E’S CREW DUTIES
The 3E:
supervises Engine Room staff
instructs and supervises the engine ratings
ensure workers under his supervision comply with safety requirements
ensures above comply with environmental protection requirements
develops crew under him through personal contact, guidance and example
ENGINE CADET (EC)
The EC reports to the 2E. The EC is trained as a future engineer. The EC is following the training programme.
The EC:
assists watches in the Engine Control Room
performs any other duties as assigned
is responsible for updating his logbook signed by Duty Engineer
QUALIFICATIONS
The EC’s qualifications are:
graduate of a recognized Marine Academy or Technical College.
possession of all valid certificates under STCW and the Flag of the ship for the type of the ship and her trading
